Artist Statement
My paintings and drawings present a navigable topography, one that is not tamed into a recognizably uniform system. I propose them as unfinished stories in which missing elements and ones that are buried compel the viewers to complete the work with their own imagination.
In my practice I incorporate ink, vellum paper, paint on canvas, and digital painting processes. I use the same boldness or delicacy achievable with acrylics or ink that is involved when painting with a digitizing tablet. Virtual colors differ from the ones in reality, though. I must make adjustments when leaving the digital world to transpose themes onto canvas or paper, while preserving digital characteristics, such as multiple layers or vibrant colors. Overlapping layers become suggestive of what was or what might have been, exposing a palimpsest of sorts. By hiding what was previously carefully painted or painstakingly cut and applied, my goal is to create a new dimension, both physically and metaphorically.
Delving into this world of painting over print, and printing paintings, I intend to provoke uneasiness and prevent the work from becoming too decipherable or predictable. Sometimes the digital paintings are used as source material for physical paintings, other times they are left to stand on their own. Mediation informs my decision-making and propels the work to a new level of communication with the observer, who is challenged by the resulting ambiguity.
